| The lawn bowling green is a 36 metre square surface. The green is itself divided into 6 rinks, each rink measuring 6 metres wide by 6 metres long. The object of the game is to deliver your bowls from the mat at one of the green toward the target jack which should be at least 23 metres beyond the mat The bowler must have at least one foot on or hovering over the mat when the bowl is released. Scoring - a team gets 1 point for each bowl they have closer to the jack than the other team (this is called the count). The duration of the game varies - In major competitions a game usually consists of 21 ends, but 18, 15 or even 14 can be played. In singles competitions and sometimes in team play the game may be played on a points basis - e.g. first to 21 points. The game can be played as a singles, pairs, triples or fours contest; The four person event being the classic version of the game. Each team or rink has 4 players - the lead, second, third and skip. The best way to get to grips with the rules, is to play. Weather permitting, you will always find bowlers on your local green, so come on down. YOU are sure to have a warm welcome and there are always friendly games going on, in which you would be more than welcome to join in. Greens are generally open from April through to September. Bowls can often be rented/borrowed, as can flat shoes ( which must be worn on the greens at all times).
